Gel polish, builder gel, hard gel, poly gel, hybrid gel, Gel X, acrylic. Six names for things that sound alike, get used interchangeably online, and cost different amounts. Here is what each one actually is, in plain words, with current starting prices at NAB Nail Bar in Las Vegas.
The short version: gel polish is colour only. Builder gel, hard gel and hybrid gel add strength over your own nail. Poly gel, Gel X and acrylic add length. The real decision is usually strength versus length, and how you want it taken off.

Questions people actually ask
What is the difference between gel polish and gel nails?
Gel polish is colour. It is painted on your own nail and cured under a lamp, and it adds no length and very little strength. “Gel nails” usually means an enhancement — builder gel, hard gel, poly gel or Gel X — which adds a layer of product that makes the nail thicker, stronger or longer. A gel manicure starts at $50; enhancements start at $60.
Poly gel vs gel: what is the difference?
Poly gel is a thick putty that your technician sculpts into shape and then cures, so it builds real length and structure. Plain gel, meaning gel polish, only coats what is already there. Poly gel is closer to acrylic in what it can do, but it is lighter and has no smell. Poly gel starts at $75.
What is hybrid gel, and how is it different from regular gel?
Hybrid gel sits between a gel manicure and a full enhancement. It gives you the durability of a gel product with the look and feel of a manicure rather than a built-up nail, so it suits anyone who wants their natural length to last longer without extensions. Hybrid gel starts at $75.
Builder gel vs poly gel: which is which?
Builder gel is softer and is used as an overlay — a strengthening layer over your own nail, with maybe a few millimetres of length. Poly gel is thicker and is sculpted, so it can build a full extension. Builder gel soaks off; poly gel is filed off. Builder gel starts at $60, poly gel at $75.
Hard gel vs poly gel: what is the difference?
Both build length and both are filed off rather than soaked. Hard gel is brushed on in layers and self-levels, which gives a very smooth finish. Poly gel is a putty, so it is shaped by hand and is easier to build thick length with quickly. Hard gel starts at $60 as an overlay or $80 for a full set; poly gel is $75.
Hard gel vs hybrid gel: which should I get?
Get hard gel if you want length or a strong apex that holds a shape. Get hybrid gel if you like your own nail length and just want it to stop chipping and peeling. Hard gel is filed off and hybrid gel soaks off, which also matters if you change your mind often.
Builder gel vs hybrid gel?
They overlap. Both are worn over the natural nail and both soak off. Builder gel adds more structure and a little length; hybrid gel is finished to look like a manicure. If your nails bend and split, builder gel. If they are healthy and you want longer wear, hybrid gel.
Soft gel vs poly gel?
“Soft gel” is the category Gel X belongs to — a pre-shaped tip made of flexible gel that bonds to your nail and soaks off later. Poly gel is sculpted from putty and filed off. Soft gel is faster to apply and gentler to remove; poly gel is more customisable in shape and thickness.
Gel X vs acrylic: which is better?
Neither is better outright; they fail differently. Gel X is lighter, goes on faster because the tip is already shaped, and soaks off without filing your natural nail. Acrylic is firmer, holds very long lengths and sharp shapes better, and is filed off. Gel X starts at $65, acrylic at $70. If you are between sets often, Gel X is kinder. If you want two-inch stilettos that survive a month, acrylic.
Acrylic vs gel nails: which lasts longer?
In practice they last about the same — two to three weeks before a fill, three to four before the shape goes. What changes the answer is your hands, not the product. Acrylic tends to hold long lengths longer; gel products tend to chip less at the free edge.
Which one is least damaging to your natural nails?
Removal does more damage than any product. Anything that soaks off — gel polish, builder gel, hybrid gel, Gel X — is gentler than anything that has to be filed down, as long as it is removed properly and not picked off. The most common cause of thin, sore nails is a client peeling a set off at home.
What should I get if my nails are weak, peeling or splitting?
Builder gel or hard gel as an overlay. Both add a protective layer over your own nail without extensions, so your nail grows underneath while the overlay takes the knocks. Start at $60 for either.
What should I get for really long nails?
Acrylic or poly gel. Both can be sculpted thick enough at the stress point to hold the length. Gel X also goes long — the long and XL sets start at $95 — but at extreme lengths a sculpted product gives more control.
