Hard Gel Fills: How Often and What to Expect

The short answer: most people book a hard gel fill every two to three weeks, depending on how fast their nails grow. With proper care a hard gel set holds up for about three to four weeks before it needs one. At NAB Nail Bar a hard gel fill starts from $65 on our price list, and Amy and Starr both list hard gel fills on their technician pages.

This post covers the timing, what happens in the chair and when a fill stops making sense. For the service itself, from overlays to sculpted sets, see our main page on hard gel nails in Las Vegas.

What a hard gel fill is

Hard gel doesn’t grow out evenly with your nail. As your natural nail grows, a gap opens near the cuticle and the thickest part of the gel (the apex) slowly moves toward the tip. That shift is what makes an older set feel top-heavy and more likely to catch or crack.

A fill fixes that without starting over. Your technician files back the grown-out gel, adds fresh hard gel into the gap at the base, rebuilds the apex where it belongs and reshapes the free edge. You leave with the same set, back in balance, and you don’t pay for a whole new application.

How often you need a hard gel fill

Two to three weeks is the usual range, and our price list says the same: most clients come in every two to three weeks, depending on how fast their nails grow. A few things push you toward the shorter end:

  • Fast-growing nails. The gap at the cuticle shows sooner.
  • Length. Longer or sculpted sets carry more weight at the tip, so balance matters more.
  • Your hands’ workload. Typing, lifting, cleaning and a lot of hand washing all add wear.

Shorter overlays on slower-growing nails often stretch closer to the three-to-four-week mark. Going much past that is where problems start.

Signs it’s time to book

  • A visible band of natural nail between the gel and your cuticle
  • The nail feels heavier at the tip or starts catching on things
  • Small lifting at the edges or near the cuticle
  • The shape looks longer or flatter than it did on day one

If an edge is lifting, don’t pick or peel it. Pulling gel off takes layers of your natural nail with it. Book a fill and let your technician deal with it.

What to expect at the appointment

  1. Check. Your technician looks for lifting, cracks or weak spots before she starts.
  2. File back. Loose or lifted gel is removed and the old surface is thinned so the new gel bonds.
  3. Fill and rebalance. Fresh hard gel goes into the regrowth area and the apex is rebuilt.
  4. Shape and finish. Length and shape are tidied, then the nails are finished in your colour or design.

A fill is also a good time to change the look. A new colour or nail art goes on as part of the finish, and detailed art adds time, so mention it when you book.

Fill or start over?

A fill keeps the set you already have. A new set makes more sense when:

  • Several nails are lifting badly or have broken
  • The set has gone well past four weeks and the balance is far off
  • You want to switch to a different system altogether

If you’re thinking about switching, our post on gel nails compared explains how builder gel, hard gel, poly gel, hybrid gel and Gel X differ. If what you really want is strength on your natural nails without extensions, our page on builder gel nails is worth a read too.

What a hard gel fill costs at NAB

These are starting prices from our price list. Every number is a starting price, and your technician sets her own rates.

  • Fill — Hard Gel: from $65
  • Fill — Hard Gel & Gel Pedicure: from $110
  • Full Set — Hard Gel: from $80
  • Hard Gel Overlay: from $60
  • Nail Repair: from $5

Booking nails and toes together is cheaper than booking them separately, and it is one appointment rather than two.

Who does hard gel at NAB

According to their pages on our site:

  • Amy does hard gel full sets and hard gel fills. She doesn’t do acrylic fills.
  • Starr does hard gel fills and full sets, and builds 3D florals onto hard gel sets.
  • Kim does hard gel overlays, which work well for nails that bend, split or peel.
  • Nga applies hard gel over your natural nail or with tips, depending on the length you want.
  • Nora does hard gel and sculpted nails, built and shaped on the nail.
  • Shindy does hard gel applications along with Gel X.

When you call, say you need a hard gel fill so we can book you with the right technician for the right amount of time. You can see everyone on our technicians page.

Making your set last until the next fill

  • Use cuticle oil daily
  • Wear gloves for cleaning and dishes, and avoid harsh chemicals
  • Don’t use your nails as tools to open cans, peel labels or scrape things
  • Book your next fill before you leave, so it doesn’t slip past three weeks

Hard gel fill questions

How often should I get a hard gel fill?

Every two to three weeks for most people, depending on how fast your nails grow. With proper care a set holds up for about three to four weeks before it needs a fill.

How much is a hard gel fill?

A hard gel fill is from $65 at NAB Nail Bar. A hard gel fill with a gel pedicure is from $110.

What happens if I wait too long for a fill?

The apex moves toward the tip, so the nail gets top-heavy and more likely to lift, catch or crack. If too much has grown out or lifted, a new set may make more sense than a fill.

Can I change my nail colour at a fill?

Yes. The colour or design goes on as part of the finish. If you want detailed nail art, mention it when you book so we can hold enough time.
