What cat eye nails are
Cat-eye gel contains fine magnetic particles. A magnet pulls them into a bright line or a velvet band, which is where the shifting shimmer comes from. It is a gel finish that goes on natural nails or enhancements. It is not the same process as Gel X tip extensions or acrylic sculpting, so you choose your base and add the cat-eye effect on top.
How the magnet effect is made
- Base color. Your technician applies the cat-eye gel color in thin layers.
- Magnet. Before curing, a magnet is held over each nail to draw the particles into the shape you want.
- Cure. The gel is cured under the lamp to lock the line in place.
- Top coat. A glossy finish seals the look.
The direction and angle of the magnet change the result. A narrow, graphic line looks different from a wide, velvety band, and your tech can test the direction and reposition the light before curing.
Choosing your cat-eye effect
Deep jewel tones make the magnetic stripe especially dramatic, while soft neutrals give a more understated velvet look. Cat eye can cover every nail, or it can act as an accent over a coordinating gel color, so the final set can be subtle, bold, or somewhere in between. Bring a reference photo if you have one.
