The short answer: book Barefoot toenail reconstruction at least a few days before you need to be in sandals or a pool, and ideally one to three weeks ahead so you can get the technician and time slot you want. The new nail is finished in a single visit, you walk out in your own shoes the same day, and it is built to last up to about six months, so booking early costs you nothing. If an injury is still healing, start planning sooner, because the skin needs to be fully healed before anything is built over it.
This post is about timing: when to book around a trip, a wedding or pool season, and what to expect. For what the service is, prices, the technicians who do it, aftercare and online booking, see our main page on toenail reconstruction in Las Vegas. Barefoot reconstruction is a cosmetic service, not a medical treatment.
Why timing matters for a trip or an event
A damaged, short or missing big toenail is easy to hide in closed shoes and hard to ignore in sandals. That is why clients often come in before something specific: a Vegas pool weekend, a wedding, a beach vacation or the start of sandal season.
How far ahead to book
One to three weeks out: the sweet spot
Booking one to three weeks before you leave gives you the best choice of days and technicians and still gives you a fresh-looking result on the trip. Because a reconstruction lasts up to about six months, a nail done three weeks before a vacation still has most of its life ahead of it when you land.
A few days out: still workable
If your trip is close, it is still worth calling. You walk out the same day, and once the gel has set you can shower, swim and wear closed shoes as normal. Your technician may ask you to keep the area dry for the first day, so avoid booking the same day you plan to be in a pool or hot tub. A gap of two or three days before the pool is a comfortable buffer.
Months out: for weddings and big events
For a wedding or another date you have known about for a while, plan backwards. If you want the nail at its freshest for the day, book your reconstruction a few weeks before rather than many months before. If your toenail was recently injured, come in early just to have it looked at, because the area must be fully healed first. If the skin is still open, weeping or sore, wait until it heals and check with a doctor before booking.
Last-minute and on a budget
If your trip is days away and a full reconstruction is not in the budget right now, ask about a Polygel toe instead. It is a short-term cosmetic cover that lasts about two to three weeks, like a gel pedicure, which can be enough to get you through one trip. It does not grow out with your nail the way Barefoot reconstruction does, so think of it as a stopgap rather than the same service.
What to expect at the appointment
Reconstruction is more specialised than a standard gel pedicure, but the visit is simple. Your technician first looks at how much natural nail remains and whether the toe is ready. She then preps the surface, builds the nail up in thin layers of gel that are cured as she goes, and shapes it to match your other toes. It is finished bare, nude, blush or with a French tip, so it reads as a real toenail rather than a cap.
Nothing is cut, drilled into the nail bed or removed surgically, and most people find it feels like a normal pedicure appointment.
How it holds up in pools, sandals and on vacation
Once it has set, a reconstructed toenail is made for exactly the kind of trip you are planning:
- Pools, hot tubs and the beach. You can swim once the gel has set. Drying between your toes when you get out is a good habit.
- Sandals and heels. The nail is shaped to match the others, so it looks natural in open shoes. Shoes that do not press hard on the big toe are kinder to it.
- Long trips. Because the gel grows out with your natural nail rather than sitting on top as a rigid shell, there is no every-two-weeks upkeep to plan around while you are away.
Our main page has the full care guidance. If the toe ever becomes red, hot or painful, see a doctor or podiatrist; this is cosmetic work, not medical care.
When to come back after your trip
As your natural nail grows, a small gap appears near the cuticle. That is your cue to book a Barefoot refill, usually somewhere in the four to six month window.
Planning checklist
- Check that the toe has fully healed if it was recently injured.
- Book one to three weeks before the trip or event, or as soon as you can if it is closer.
- Leave at least a day or two between the appointment and the pool.
- Add a gel pedicure if you want the whole foot done in one visit.
- Put a reminder in your calendar for a refill around four to six months later.

Trip and event timing questions
How long before a vacation should I get toenail reconstruction?
Ideally one to three weeks before, so you have your pick of appointments. A few days before also works, as long as you leave a day or two before swimming if your technician advises keeping it dry at first.
My toenail was injured recently. Can I still get it done before my wedding?
Only once the skin has fully healed. Come in early so a technician can look at it, and if it is still open, weeping or sore, wait and check with a doctor first.
